The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on March 19 the subsidy amount for different electric vehicles in 2024, with a maximum subsidy limit of 850000 yen (approximately 40500 yuan), which is 730000 yen lower than the minimum amount. There are mainly 7 items that serve as criteria for determining the subsidy amount, namely (1) vehicle performance such as range; (2) EV itself functions as a charging device in the event of disasters; (3) The construction status of charging facilities; (4) Reduce carbon dioxide emissions during manufacturing, etc; (5) Dealing with cyber attacks; (6) The construction status of repair points and ensuring the stability of components; (7) Cultivate maintenance talents. The Japanese government included 129.1 billion yen as a source of subsidy funds in its supplementary budget for 2023.
In terms of the maximum subsidy amount for each model, Nissan's "LEAF", Toyota's "Lexus", and Tesla's "Model 3" enjoy a maximum subsidy of 850000 yen. The highest subsidy for Korean Hyundai Motor "KONA" is 450000 yen; The highest subsidy for BYD's DOLPHIN (Dolphin) in China is 350000 yen; The lowest is the 120000 yen subsidy limit for Jaguar's I-PACE, which has decreased compared to 2023 for several overseas manufacturers such as Hyundai, BYD, and Jaguar. According to Japanese media reports, some overseas manufacturers have expressed that "the new system is not favorable to us" and it is difficult to set up repair outlets in Japan; The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry stated that it has designed a subsidy system that can support overseas manufacturers even if there are no repair factories cooperating with other company factories.
