iPhone sales decline in China
Recently, market research firm Counterpoint Research released a report stating that during the "Double Eleven" shopping festival from October 18th to November 10th this year, Apple's iPhone sales in China decreased by double digits year-on-year.
In contrast, Apple's main competitor in China, Huawei, achieved a 7% sales growth through price reduction promotions for the Pura 70 and Mate 60 series. Overall, during this year's "Double Eleven" period, China's smartphone sales decreased by 9% year-on-year.
With Chinese mobile phone manufacturers making efforts towards high-end products in recent years, Apple's competitive advantage in the Chinese market has been somewhat shaken. However, during this year's Singles' Day, Apple's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max remained among the best-selling phones.
It is worth mentioning that during this year's "Double Eleven" period, the official flagship store of Apple Store launched significant discounts on the Tmall platform, with the highest discount for the iPhone 16 series reaching 1600 yuan.
Among them, the discounted prices of iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are 500 yuan lower than the original price. In addition, Apple also offers a trade in subsidy of up to 1100 yuan, which, when combined with discounts, can save consumers up to 1600 yuan when purchasing iPhone 16 series phones.
This is not the first time that Apple's new models have lowered their prices, but the speed and magnitude of price reductions this year have exceeded previous ones.
The importance of the Chinese market to Apple is self-evident. Over the past three years, China has been the biggest driving force behind Apple's high growth. Meanwhile, China is also an important supply chain base for Apple, with over 90% of the world's iPhones manufactured in China.
In October of this year, Xiaomi released the Xiaomi 15 series phones, Honor released the Honor Magic 7 series, OPPO released the OPPO Find X8 series, and vivo released the vivo X200 series phones. These phones are all high-end models, which have a certain impact on Apple's dominance in the high-end market.
Counterpoint stated in an analysis report that Chinese smartphone brands, including Honor, iQOO, OPPO, OnePlus, Vivo, and Xiaomi, have recently launched multiple flagship models, further intensifying competition in the high-end market and with the iPhone 16 series. These new models have shown significant progress in hardware specifications and software functionality, especially in terms of intelligent AI capabilities.
