On the evening of Wednesday (November 8th), OpenAI's ChatGPT and API (Third Party Service Application Program Interface) experienced a severe shutdown, and a large number of netizens claimed they were unable to use them.
OpenAI's latest response on Thursday (November 9th) stated that it is working to address the issue of "abnormal traffic" and indicates that hackers are attempting to put their services in a difficult situation.
The company responded by discovering signs of ChatGPT being attacked by DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service). DDoS attacks are attempts by external attackers to overload the network or server and crash by repeatedly sending ping requests.
OpenAI stated, "We are dealing with periodic interruptions caused by abnormal traffic patterns that reflect DDoS attacks. We are continuing to work to alleviate this situation
At present, OpenAI has confirmed that repair measures have been implemented and services are gradually recovering. However, the official earlier stated that ChatGPT and API will still experience periodic interruptions.
ChatGPT has not experienced many "severe shutdowns" in the past year. According to statistics, ChatGPT experienced a 3-hour "severe shutdown" on August 31, and a 16-minute "severe shutdown" on September 13 thereafter.
Coincidentally, the Claude 2 chat robot under Anthropic, OpenAI's arch rival, also malfunctioned around Wednesday. Similar to ChatGPT, Claude informs users that "due to unexpected capacity limitations, we are unable to reply to your message".
Since the beginning of this year, the competition for AI models has become increasingly fierce, and this ChatGPT developer is also facing competition from AI startups with strong funds, technology giants, and early supporters of OpenAI, Elon Musk.
Just this Monday (November 7th), OpenAI held its first developer conference and released a preview version of the GPT-4 Turbo, a more powerful and faster version of its latest large-scale language model. OpenAI has also changed the logic of the product, eliminating the need for users to manually select networking, patch, and Wenshengtu DALL · E 3 modes. The robot will automatically enable corresponding functions according to user instructions.
The company also stated at the conference that approximately 100 million people currently use ChatGPT every week, and over 90% of Fortune 500 companies are building tools on the OpenAI platform.
