Recently, it was reported that Song Gang, Vice President of Production and Manufacturing at Tesla's (TSLA.US) Shanghai Gigafactory, submitted his resignation several months ago, and December 18th is his last working day. At present, Tesla has not officially appointed a new factory director in Shanghai, while Songgang plans to join a local emerging automotive brand that is currently facing production capacity bottlenecks.
As of the time of publication by Red Star Capital Bureau, Tesla China has not responded to the resignation of Song Gang.
This local emerging car brand, which is currently facing production capacity bottlenecks, is considered by the industry to be Xiaomi Auto.
Xiaomi Auto started delivery in early April this year and is still in the stage of production and sales ramp up. In June of this year, Xiaomi's delivery volume exceeded 10000 units for the first time, and climbed to 20000 units in October. In mid November, it achieved its annual delivery target of 100000 units ahead of schedule and is currently striving for a new target of 130000 units for the whole year.
According to the Xiaomi car app, the current delivery cycle for Xiaomi SU7 is as long as 21-24 weeks. Xiaomi's Beijing Yizhuang Super Factory is currently constructing its second phase factory, which will start production in July next year. After completion, the planned annual production capacity will reach 300000 vehicles.
Song Gang had previously worked at General Motors and Ford, and joined Tesla in 2018 as the first employee at Tesla's Shanghai factory. Under his leadership, the Shanghai factory was completed and put into operation in just one year.
Song Gang has also gone to the United States to participate in factory construction and potential facility business planning, and has participated in the construction of Tesla's battery and motor teams and the landing of the Shanghai energy storage super factory. The factory started construction on May 23rd this year, and the construction progress reached 45% in late August. It is planned to start production in the first quarter of 2025.
