Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on October 24th that the company will provide free upgrades to hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) computers for users who are equipped with HW3/AI3 and have purchased fully autonomous driving (FSD) functionality.
However, Musk also emphasized that the upgrade will only be carried out when the HW3 chip cannot achieve unsupervised FSD function, and it is currently unclear whether this situation will occur.
It is possible that HW3 may not meet the safety level that allows for unsupervised FSD. If this proves to be the case, we will provide free upgrades for users who have FSD functionality on HW3, and we will take care of those who have purchased FSD on HW3, "Musk said during the Q3 2024 earnings conference call.
