After experiencing a major loss of core members in the AI startup OpenAI recently, the company has regained an AI expert.
Sebastian Bubeck, the Vice President of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AIGC) research at Microsoft, has now transferred to OpenAI.
It is worth mentioning that Bubeck is one of the main authors of Microsoft's paper on the Phi model. The Phi model is a series of ultra small language and visual models, smaller in scale than traditional large language models, designed to help push artificial intelligence applications to edge devices.
At present, this fast, private, and offline device based model has surpassed OpenAI's GPT-4o in some markets, making Bubeck's expertise in small models increasingly important.
Although Bubeck's new identity at OpenAI has not yet been revealed, it seems that he will be dedicated to working on efficient small models, which is also a corner that OpenAI has not yet fully explored.
Microsoft, as one of OpenAI's largest investors, responded to this matter by stating that Bubeck will be responsible for researching General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) affairs at OpenAI, and the company expects Bubeck's future work to continue to be related to Microsoft.
The personnel who worked with Bubeck on the Microsoft Phi language big model will continue to stay at Microsoft and develop related models.
OpenAI has recently experienced a series of executive resignations, such as the departure of OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman announcing a long-term vacation, and OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati also announcing her departure.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has consistently denied any connection between their departures and the company's planned restructuring regarding these personnel movements.
