On Sunday (13th) local time, the United States announced that it will provide Israel with a set of "THAAD" anti missile system and dispatch US personnel to maintain and use the system. This highly unusual deployment aims to enhance Israel's air defense capabilities after an Iranian missile attack.
The US Department of Defense stated, "According to the President's order, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has approved the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system and related US military personnel teams to Israel to help strengthen air defense
The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) is a land-based theater anti missile system under the United States Missile Defense Agency and the United States Army, commonly referred to as the THAAD anti missile system. THAAD is a key component of the US military's layered air defense system, adding icing on the cake to Israel's anti missile defense system.
It is understood that a THAAD system typically requires around 100 soldiers to operate. It has six vehicle mounted launchers, each with eight interceptors, and a powerful radar system.
According to US President Biden, this move is to "defend Israel". The Pentagon also pointed out that this decision is the result of Iran's recent missile attacks on Israel. After Iran launched over 180 missiles at Israel on October 1st, Israel is considering retaliation against Iran.
According to White House officials on Saturday, Israel has narrowed down its list of potential Iranian targets to include so-called "Iranian military and energy infrastructure". There is currently no indication that Israel is preparing to strike Iran's nuclear facilities or intends to carry out assassination operations, but US officials have also emphasized that the Israelis have not yet made a final decision on how to proceed and when to take action.
US government officials have stated that the US has been privately urging Israel to adjust its response to avoid triggering a broader war in the Middle East. Biden also publicly expressed his opposition to Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and expressed concern about the attack on Iran's energy infrastructure.
Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, said that this deployment is part of "broader adjustments made by the US military in recent months", aimed at supporting Israel and protecting Americans from attacks by Iran and Iranian supported organizations.
However, considering Israel's own military capabilities, the United States has rarely deployed military forces outside of exercises before. In recent months, when Israel is attacked by Iran in the Middle East, the US military has helped Israel defend against warships and fighter jets. But their bases are not in Israel.
Earlier on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghzi warned that the United States is putting the lives of its troops at risk by "deploying its troops in Israel and operating the American anti missile system", and stressed that Iran will not have a "red line" in defending its own people and interests.
He posted on X: "Although we have made great efforts to contain the outbreak of all-out war in the region in recent days, I want to make it clear that we have no red line in defending our own people and interests."
