After months of negotiations and a historic strike, the leaders of the United Auto Workers reached a tentative agreement with Detroit's automakers. Now, the final decision is in the hands of ordinary workers.
Members of local chapters of the United Auto Workers' Federation across the United States will vote on the labor agreement reached with Ford Motor (F), General Motors (GM), and Chrysler parent company Stellantis as soon as this week. The proposed contract includes a 25% salary increase and a cost of living adjustment, with salary increases exceeding the total of several contracts in the past two decades.
Nevertheless, some union members are not sure whether these contract terms are sufficient for them to vote in favor. The above tentative agreement must be formally approved by an absolute majority of workers from each company, and voting is scheduled for the next few weeks.
The full voting results of these three companies are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
