On July 31st, Caixin News Agency reported that Tesla has decided to recall nearly 1.85 million cars in the United States due to concerns that defects in the car hood may cause driver accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated on Tuesday that an unlocked hood may fully open, blocking the driver's line of sight and increasing the risk of a collision.
NHTSA stated that Tesla has released a free wireless software update that can detect whether the hood is open and alert the driver.
This recall involves the 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y.
Tesla stated that it has received three reports regarding the issue in the United States, but has not yet received any reports of collisions or injuries related to the problem.
Since March this year, Tesla has been investigating some customer complaints about automatic hood opening. After further research, the company has finally decided to voluntarily recall affected vehicles "out of full caution".
Deeply troubled by security issues
In recent years, Tesla has been plagued by a series of potential safety issues. This recall is Tesla's ninth recall of the year and the fourth recall of over one million vehicles since 2022.
Last December, Tesla recalled 2.03 million cars in the United States, almost all Tesla cars on American roads. The reason for the recall was that the auto drive system was defective.
At present, Tesla is still under federal investigation. Previously, NHTSA reported that Tesla's auto drive system had "serious security vulnerabilities", resulting in at least 467 collisions, 13 of which resulted in deaths and many others caused serious injuries.
Tesla announced its worst quarterly profit margin in over five years last week, highlighting the electric car manufacturer's difficulty in reviving car sales amid slowing demand.
