With the release of the new big language model GPT-4o by OpenAI earlier this week, people's enthusiasm for artificial intelligence has taken it to the next level, and OpenAI is undoubtedly benefiting from it. A set of industry data shows that after OpenAI launched the exploding GPT-4o model, the company's revenue from mobile devices surged last week, marking the largest increase in history.
GPT-4o was launched on May 13th. This model can perform real-time inference on audio, visual, and text. Compared to existing models, GPT-4o performs particularly well in image and audio understanding. GPT-4o can respond to audio input within 232 milliseconds, similar to the reaction time of humans in conversations.
According to data from application intelligence company Appfigures, this technological innovation is driving a large number of OpenAI users on mobile devices to upgrade to their paid subscription services.
Although OpenAI has stated that GPT-4o will be offered to users for free with a limited quantity, the free service of this model is currently not available for ChatGPT users on mobile devices. Therefore, if mobile users want to experience the latest features, they must upgrade to the ChatGPT Plus monthly package of $19.99.
This strategic decision has greatly increased the demand for OpenAI paid subscription services among mobile users and resulted in the company's largest ever revenue growth on mobile devices.
According to Appfigures, the net revenue of ChatGPT mobile applications jumped by 22% on the day of GPT-4o release and continued to grow in the following days.
Last Tuesday, this net revenue figure reached as high as $900000, almost twice the daily average revenue of $491000 for the application before. The net income figure is calculated after Apple and Google commission payments.
Prior to this, ChatGPT's record surge in mobile revenue occurred in April, but the magnitude was much smaller. And at that time, it was only an abnormal increase in income within a day, which was not sustainable.
According to Appfigures, from May 13th to 17th, the net revenue of ChatGPT mobile application on the App Store and Google Play reached $4.2 million, marking the largest revenue surge seen by the application so far.
The surge in income indicates a genuine demand among global consumers to try the latest artificial intelligence models, especially on mobile devices - even if it is more expensive than subscribing to Netflix membership. More importantly, the data also shows that its income trend seems to have not slowed down yet, and in fact, it may remain or even increase.
Specifically, Apple's App Store still contributes the majority of new revenue, accounting for 81%, while the United States remains the largest market for OpenAI with revenue of $1.8 million. Other countries with the highest income contribution include Germany ($282000), the United Kingdom ($212000), Japan ($210000), France ($147000), Canada ($134000), South Korea ($123000), Brazil ($117000), Australia ($102000) and Türkiye ($89000).
