Two days after reaching a preliminary agreement with Ford Motor, the UAW is about to complete a preliminary agreement with General Motors on a new contract.
Sources familiar with the matter said that the negotiations between the two sides lasted all night on Thursday until Friday morning and reconvened in the early afternoon to push for an agreement. Insiders said that General Motors made a proposal last night, similar to the preliminary agreement reached between the union and Ford on Wednesday.
People familiar with the situation said that UAW Chairman Shawn Fain and General Motors CEO Mary Barra had several hours of talks with negotiators on Thursday, but they warned that due to unstable negotiations, it is currently unclear whether an agreement is about to be reached.
According to insiders, Mike Booth, who represents UAW in negotiations with General Motors, told the leaders of the union's local branch on Thursday's conference call that there are still several issues under discussion, including retirement benefits and wages.
