Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Thursday (September 26) that "we will invest $3.3 billion in South Carolina to build two new data centers, expand our cloud and data center infrastructure, create local employment opportunities, and support economic activity
It is reported that two new data centers will be built in Dorchester County, northwest of Charleston, and Google will invest $2 billion in these two projects; In addition, Google will invest $1.3 billion to expand its data center located in Berkeley County.
Todd Friddie, the county council chairman of Dorchester County, praised Google's move as the "right decision" and "it has brought a significant amount of tax revenue to our school district and county. Friddie also stated that the construction of these two new centers will take one year to 18 months and is expected to create 200 new operational positions.
Currently, South Carolina is part of Google Cloud's global network of 40 regions, covering over 200 countries and territories.
The investment in data centers is part of Alphabet's commitment to building a larger infrastructure, as reflected in Google's July report. At that time, CEO Pichai pointed out, "We are in the early stages of what I consider to be a very transformative field and technology, and for us, the risk of underinvestment is much greater than the risk of overinvestment here
At that time, Google also announced a capital expenditure of $13 billion for the second quarter and expected quarterly capital expenditures for the remaining two quarters of this year to reach or exceed $12 billion.
On Thursday, Audrey Van Belleghem, Director of Global Data Center Strategy and Operations at Google, stated that these investments in South Carolina demonstrate Google's long-term commitment to the region.
According to Statista, Amazon Web Services (AWS) leads all cloud infrastructure service providers with a market share of 31%, followed closely by Microsoft's Azure with 25% and Google Cloud with 11%.
