In order to comply with EU digital competition laws, Apple announced on Thursday that it will make adjustments to iOS and iPadOS by the end of this year, allowing EU iPhone users to delete local applications, including the App Store and Safari, and making third-party tools more accessible.
Apple stated that a software update later this year will allow iPhone and iPad users to remove the company's pre installed applications, including Safari Web Browser, App Store, as well as Photos, Camera, and Messages apps, with only Settings and Phone not removable.
In addition, Apple will simplify the default settings for third-party applications such as browsers and contactless payment methods. Next spring, it will also allow users to set default navigation, translation apps, and spam phone filtering apps.
These updates come from our ongoing dialogue with the European Commission regarding compliance with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act in these areas, "the company wrote in its latest statement.
Apple has stated that it plans to create a dedicated space on the iPhone for users to change default applications.
On March 7th of this year, the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) officially came into effect.
As one of the anti-monopoly measures issued by the European Union against tech giants, DMA can curb malicious competitive behavior on large network platforms and ensure that consumers have more choices. Some media pointed out that the bill has milestone significance, and its implementation means a turning point in regulating large technology companies. Some analysts also believe that the bill will reshape the global technology industry.
The company most affected by the Digital Markets Act is Apple. Under the pressure of the bill, Apple was forced to open up its closed ecosystem. The company has been allowing iOS users in Europe to download apps from third-party sources since March this year, not just limited to its own App Store.
At the same time, the handling fees for iOS apps in the EU region will also be reduced, from the original 30% to 17%, or from a discounted 15% to 10%. Users can also use other payment methods and easily choose a new default web browser.
Previously, Apple also provided more options for EU users in iOS 17.4 and higher versions, allowing them to freely choose their favorite app stores, email, browsers, and NFC programs.
