Polestar, a global luxury pure electric high-performance car brand listed on NASDAQ, recently released the 2023 Polestar Sustainable Development Report, which revealed that Polestar has continued to make significant progress in achieving climate goals. In 2023, each sold Polestar car has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 9%. Fredrika Klaren, the global sustainable development officer of Polestar, stated in an interview with Shanghai Securities News that according to the latest report, compared to 2022, Polestar reduced its carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by 3.4 tons per sold Polestar car in 2023. Polestar has established partnerships with multiple Chinese industry chain enterprises.
The successful reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by Polestar is mainly attributed to three aspects: the use of specially selected materials with less impact on the climate, the use of renewable energy in the production of cars and batteries, and the improvement of energy efficiency in the use of cars.
Frederica Claren told Shanghai Securities News that the production of power batteries plays the most important role in the entire automotive production process, and it may have the greatest negative impact on the environment or sustainable development. "So, without a doubt, we must take relevant measures to control the negative impact of battery production during the entire vehicle production process or throughout the entire lifecycle."
Frederica Claren further stated that Polestar also places great emphasis on the source of raw materials in the field of power battery production and will conduct necessary traceability of raw materials. "We will trace various important elements involved in battery production to ensure that we are responsible for the entire production. In 2023, Polestar will also focus on strengthening traceability from raw materials to finished products, and expanding the tracking of the number of battery risk materials to achieve tracking of lithium and nickel elements used in Polestar 3 batteries. In addition, cobalt and mica elements have also been tracked using blockchain technology since 2020 and 2021, respectively. Therefore, we will trace many important elements involved in battery production to ensure their safety."
In addition to power batteries, Frederica Claren revealed that Polestar has established contacts with 30 key partners, including Chinese companies, from the steel and plastic industries. Polestar will actively conduct industry research in the field of raw materials, explore better solutions for climate neutrality, and develop the "Polestar Zero Carbon Plan" because this track has great potential.
