According to the latest Report on Car Rental and Self driving Tour in 2024 Spring Festival released by Ctrip, the number of domestic car rental and self driving orders during the Spring Festival of the the Year of the Loong nearly doubled year on year, with an increase of more than 400% compared with the Spring Festival of 2019. In terms of expenses, the per capita car rental expenses for this Spring Festival have increased by 20% year-on-year. The longest rental period for self driving in China is 39 days, with a self driving distance of about 10000 kilometers; Overseas self driving tours are also popular, with Ctrip's Shanghai overseas car rental order volume increasing by more than 20 times year-on-year, and the longest self driving rental period reaching 49 days.
With more flexible and convenient transportation combinations, more and more users choose to rent cars and drive as their destination for sightseeing travel. The report shows that the proportion of out of town car rental orders on the Ctrip platform is as high as 93%, and the combination booking of "air tickets+car rental" accounts for 40% of the overall car rental orders.
From the perspective of self driving population, the post-80s and post-90s generations are still the main group for Spring Festival self driving tours, with the post-80s generation accounting for 49% and the post-90s generation reaching 30%. The growth rate of post-00s is the most rapid, with the growth rate of self driving users after 00s being 80% higher than other age groups during this year's Spring Festival. Leisure tourism and family travel have also become the main needs of self driving travel for the 80s and 90s generations. Haikou, Shanghai, and Kunming have become popular destinations for parent-child self driving tours.
From the perspective of car rental habits, this year's Spring Festival self driving users have booked vehicles on average 7 days in advance; 52% of orders choose short to medium distance self driving within 1 to 3 days, while 41% choose long distance self driving within 4 to 7 days. In terms of consumption, the average price of domestic self driving during the Spring Festival was 3020 yuan, an increase of 20% compared to last year.
The popular self driving routes during the Spring Festival include Hainan Ring Road, Yunnan West Ring Road, Sichuan West Ring Road, Xinjiang Ring Road, and Northwest Ring Road. The popular destinations for car rentals during the Spring Festival include Haikou, Sanya, Kunming, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Dali, Shanghai, Nanning, Shenzhen, and Xishuangbanna; Xi'an, Guiyang, Hangzhou, Jieyang, Chaozhou, Guilin, Fuzhou, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Changchun are the top ten dark horse destinations for domestic Spring Festival self driving tours.
The report shows that new customers accounted for nearly 45% of car rental users during the 2024 Spring Festival, with a large proportion being first-time self driving travelers.
During this year's Spring Festival, the proportion of self driving tours in the outbound tourism industry is also very high. The report shows that the overseas car rental order volume on the Ctrip platform has increased by more than 20 times year-on-year. Melbourne, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, Phuket, Sydney, Bangkok, Auckland, Abu Dhabi and other cities have become popular destinations for overseas self driving. Among them, Melbourne's Spring Festival car rental orders in Australia increased by more than 56 times year-on-year, Dubai's self driving orders increased by nearly 50 times year-on-year, and New Zealand's Spring Festival self driving orders increased by more than 35 times year-on-year.
