On December 22nd, Tesla and the Lingang New Area Management Committee held a land transfer signing ceremony for the Tesla Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory project, announcing the official start of this milestone project.
As Tesla's first energy storage super factory project outside of the United States, the factory plans to start production in 2024, with an initial plan to produce 10000 commercial energy storage batteries annually and a storage capacity of nearly 40GWh.
Starting production in the fourth quarter of next year to supply the global market
The reporter learned from Tesla that the Tesla Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory project will plan to produce ultra large commercial energy storage batteries (Megapacks) to supply the global market. Construction will start in the first quarter of 2024 and production will begin in the fourth quarter. The previous plan was to start construction in the third quarter of 2023 and put it into operation in the second quarter of 2024.
The initial plan for this project is to produce 10000 commercial energy storage batteries annually, with a storage capacity of nearly 40GWh (gigawatt hours). Each commercial energy storage battery can store over 3MWh (megawatt hours) of energy, suitable for multiple scenario applications such as renewable energy systems and peak demand management.
It is reported that Tesla's upcoming Megapack manufactured in Shanghai can store over 3.9MWh of energy per unit, which can meet the hourly electricity consumption of 3600 households. Thanks to integrated system integration and modular design, construction efficiency and equipment reliability have been greatly improved.
In fact, Tesla has been actively expanding its energy business, promoting the development of the vertical industry chain of photovoltaic power generation energy storage new energy vehicles, and creating an ecological closed loop.
As early as 2016, Tesla acquired SolarCity to layout photovoltaic power generation, using Solar Roof products to seize the household photovoltaic market, and launched a "photovoltaic power generation+energy storage" product system to form an organic cycle of "storage+charging and discharging". For the home end, Tesla provides household energy storage devices such as Powerwall and Solar Roof for solar power generation. For the enterprise side, Tesla provides energy storage devices and solutions such as Powerpack and Megapack.
On December 22nd, Tesla officials stated that Tesla's energy storage products, including Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack, are currently distributed in over 65 countries and regions worldwide, with over 1500 operating sites and a total installed capacity of over 10 gigawatt hours. Among them, Megapack has already used renewable energy to supplement and ensure local electricity in many regions such as North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe.
Tesla Global Vice President Tao Lin said that Tesla's energy storage super factory is not only an important optimization of the company's global production layout, but also will help Shanghai's new energy storage industry development and green low-carbon transformation.
The first 11 months of this year
Tesla Shanghai Superfactory Delivers Over 850000 Vehicles
It is reported that since 2019, Tesla's investment in Shanghai has been continuously increasing, including increasing the production capacity of Shanghai's super factories, establishing Shanghai's energy storage super factories, investing in the construction of super charging pile factories, and establishing Shanghai's R&D innovation center.
In the first 11 months of 2023, Tesla's Shanghai super factory delivered over 850000 electric vehicles, exceeding the full year of 2022, a year-on-year increase of 30%. The Shanghai super factory has become Tesla's main export center globally, with electric vehicles selling well in overseas regions such as Asia Pacific and Europe.
On December 1st, Tesla announced the first delivery of its Cybertruck Cyber pickup truck. It is reported that the current order volume of Cybertruck pickup trucks has exceeded 2 million units. In 2022, global pickup truck sales exceeded 5.65 million units, with the North American market being the largest pickup truck market in the world, with annual sales exceeding 2.7 million units.
In the first three quarters of this year, Tesla has delivered over 1.324 million electric vehicles globally, exceeding the 1.314 million vehicles delivered for the entire year of 2022. According to the annual delivery target of 1.8 million vehicles, Tesla needs to deliver 476000 vehicles in the fourth quarter.
Some institutions predict that Tesla's global sales in 2024 will increase by 25% -30% year-on-year, between 2.2 million and 2.3 million vehicles. There is a possibility of unexpected growth driven by Model Y sales.
