Microsoft rose after announcing that OpenAI founders Ultraman and Brockman would lead the new Microsoft artificial intelligence team.
On the late night of November 19th local time, Microsoft CEO Nadella announced that OpenAI founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman would join Microsoft.
Nadella stated that Ultraman, Brockman, and their colleagues will join Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. Nadella also confirmed on social media that Emmett Shear will serve as the CEO of OpenAI. "We look forward to learning about Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them," he said
Affected by this news, Microsoft rose 2.23% to $378.29 as of press release.
In the past three days, AI (artificial intelligence) giant OpenAI has been staging a "coup scene".
On November 17th, OpenAI suddenly announced that the board of directors had announced that Ultraman would resign as CEO and leave the company, with Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati serving as interim CEO, effective immediately. The board of directors also announced that Chairman Brockman would resign, and Brockman also announced that he would leave the company.
According to multiple insiders, three senior researchers at OpenAI resigned on the evening of the 17th to express their support for Ultraman and Brockman. In addition to them, many employees are extremely disappointed with the board's decision.
On November 18th local time, according to multiple foreign media reports, investors and some employees of OpenAI are collaborating with Microsoft to pressure the company's board of directors to withdraw its decision to dismiss former CEO Ultraman and dismiss him from his directorship.
The "coup drama" of OpenAI was once expected to undergo a major reversal, and Ultraman was infinitely close to returning. Ultraman returned to OpenAI on Sunday and participated in negotiations. He also posted on X, saying, 'This is my first and last time wearing this badge.'.
But on the evening of November 19th, according to sources, the board of directors will hire Emmett Shear as CEO to replace founder Ultraman.
Previously, sources familiar with the situation revealed to the media that Mira Murati, the interim CEO of OpenAI, plans to rehire the two people who have been fired, but the specific positions have not been determined yet. Under the leadership of the largest shareholder Microsoft and venture capital firm Thrive Capital, OpenAI investors are urging the board to resign and hoping that Ultraman will resume his position.
However, with Nadella's announcement of Ultraman's joining, this three-day palace battle came to an end, but its impact on OpenAI and Microsoft may only have just begun.
