On October 22nd, according to reports from various US media outlets, Boeing mechanics who are currently on strike will vote on a new contract proposal this week, which may end weeks of work stoppages.
According to ABC, the International Federation of Mechanical and Aerospace Workers (IAM), representing approximately 33000 Boeing workers, has stated that under the new proposal, a 35% salary increase will be offered during the four-year contract period. The proposal will also increase Boeing's contributions to workers' retirement benefit plans.
According to the report, interview experts stated that the new contract proposal is likely to receive majority support from union members due to the increased pricing. But experts also point out that it is difficult to predict how workers will respond due to the ongoing intense confrontation.
The International Federation of Mechanical and Aerospace Workers (IAM) did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a statement released online, the union stated that with the support of Acting Secretary of Labor Su Weishi, it has received negotiation proposals and proposals to end the strike, which are being considered by its members.
Multiple American media outlets, including CNN, have analyzed that this is the first strike that Boeing has faced in 16 years, dealing a new blow to the company. According to Standard&Poor's estimates, Boeing is estimated to lose approximately $1 billion per month due to this impact. In addition, Boeing's credit rating may be downgraded to "junk level".
Further analysis of the report suggests that the crisis faced by Boeing goes far beyond the impact of strikes. In 2018 and 2019, two fatal accidents occurred on Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, resulting in a total of 346 deaths. Since 2024, Boeing aircraft accidents have occurred frequently, once again raising concerns about its safety performance from the outside world. These events have also severely strained the financial situation of the company.
According to The Wall Street Journal, in response to the crisis, Boeing recently announced plans to support its finances through up to $35 billion in new financing. Boeing President and CEO Ultraberg also announced plans to reduce the total number of employees by approximately 10% in the coming months.
