Abuja, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's federal competition regulatory agency announced on July 23 that Nigeria has decided to impose a fine of $220 million on Facebook's parent company, Metaverse Platform, and its subsidiary, Watts App.
At a press conference held in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, on the same day, Adamu Abdulrahi, acting head of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission of Nigeria, said that after three years of intensive investigation, it was determined that the metaverse platform company had engaged in actions that deprived Nigerian data subjects of their right to self-determination, transmission, and sharing of personal data.
Abdullahi said that in other countries, metaverse platform companies allow data subjects to choose whether to share their data, but this is not the case in Nigeria, so the Nigerian regulatory authorities have decided to impose fines for this discriminatory practice.
According to the Nigerian news agency, Watts App Company stated that its parent company, Metaverse Platform, will appeal the fine decision.
