On June 30th, # Kindle China Electronic Bookstore stopped downloading services # and made it to the hot search.
According to the official website of Amazon China, starting from June 30, 2024, Kindle China Electronic Bookstore will cease cloud download services, and subsequently, undedownloaded e-books will be unable to be downloaded and read.
Once almost overturning the existence of paper books, now the star electronic reader product Kindle has finally come to an end in China.
In fact, as early as June 30, 2023, Amazon's Kindle China Electronic Bookstore officially ceased operations. This means that Chinese users cannot purchase new e-books anymore. For e-books that have already been purchased, they can be downloaded before June 30, 2024 and can be continued to be read thereafter.
Amazon has previously released an exit schedule
In 2022, Amazon released the "Kindle China Electronic Bookstore Operation Adjustment", announcing the cessation of Kindle electronic bookstore operations in China one year later.
On June 30, 2023, according to a notice issued by the Amazon Kindle service account, the operation of the Chinese Kindle e-book store was officially suspended, and users will no longer be able to purchase new e-books thereafter.
According to the notice, users can download and continue reading e-books they have previously purchased before June 30, 2024. The e-books and personal documents stored on Kindle devices will not be affected.
The customer service for Kindle China will also continue until June 30, 2024.
Once the existence that subverted paper books
A few years ago, domestic sales exceeded one million
In 2007, Amazon launched the Kindle, sparking a global e-book reading frenzy, and officially entered China in 2013. At that time, as a pioneer in the profit model of the digital content industry, Kindle brought 38700 e-book resources to Chinese consumers as soon as it entered the market.
At that time, owning a Kindle was equivalent to living an artistic life. In 2018, the sales of Kindle readers in China exceeded one million.
Kindle has been in China for ten years, and domestic brands such as iFlytek, Huawei, Zhangyue, Wenshi, and WeChat Reading have also emerged in the domestic e-book market, causing a certain impact on Kindle's market share.
In recent years, Amazon has gradually withdrawn some of its business operations in the Chinese market. In May 2023, Amazon App Store announced that from July 17, 2023, Amazon China will no longer provide App Store services. At that time, Amazon China responded by stating that the Amazon Appstore was an app store for users to download games and mobile applications for Android devices. Therefore, discontinuing the Amazon Appstore service would not affect any current Amazon business operations in China, including Amazon overseas purchases, Amazon global store openings, and Amazon China's official website.
It is understood that Amazon China's current business includes cross-border e-commerce businesses such as Amazon overseas purchases, Amazon global store opening, Amazon advertising, Amazon global logistics, Amazon cloud technology, and Amazon intelligent hardware and services.
70% of respondents: Love reading and listening to books on mobile phones
On the day of the shutdown on June 30, 2023, Southern Metropolis Daily conducted a small random survey of users who owned Kindle. 75% of the respondents said that the frequency of using Kindle after purchase was very low, and it was basically put aside for "eating dirt". They usually use their phones more to read e-books and listen to books.
A small number of respondents also expressed that they gave up using it after buying it because they couldn't tolerate the extremely slow page flipping speed. Meanwhile, due to the increasing abundance of free book resources on the internet, over half of the respondents stated that they rarely enter Kindle's electronic bookstores to purchase books, so the closure of this business sector has little impact on themselves.
However, some of the first batch of Kindle users have expressed that they will not give up using Kindle devices. After the shutdown of Kindle electronic bookstores in China, they may choose to open another Amazon account in other countries and regions to continue purchasing and downloading books. Some users have also expressed that they will download books through other apps and transfer them to Kindle.
Nowadays, smartphones and tablets not only handle digital reading, but also have external networking functions; And new ways such as listening to books also provide more reading experiences.
As netizens expressed their regret in their comments, the emergence of Kindle did indeed bring revolutionary products to the time. However, looking forward, digital reading is still ongoing.
