According to the United States Congress Hill report of 26 October, studies published by the United States Retail Federation show an upward trend in retail crime in the United States, with retailing in more than a dozen cities being most affected.
The report indicates that stock losses in the United States-wide retail trade amounted to $112.1 billion in 2022, or 1.6 per cent of total turnover, and that approximately 65 per cent of the losses were caused by theft, including organized shoplifting. The cities most affected by retail crime in 2022 were Los Angeles, Auckland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Houston, New York, Seattle, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Miami and Albuquerque.
In its report, the United States Retail Federation states: “Retail crime, violence and theft continue to affect the retail business at an unprecedented level. The impact is not limited to major cities, and none of the retailers in the United States who have broken down markets, sizes and locations have been spared.”
